Qantas to close US, UK contact centres in favour of Aus

Australian airline Qantas says it will close overseas contact centres as part of a cost cutting push, while focusing its customer service efforts in Australia.

Qantas last week announced plans to cut 1500 jobs across the world to try to offset the rising cost of jet fuel and challenging conditions in the aviation industry. As part of the job cuts, the airline will close its long-running contact centres in Tucson, Arizona and London, with the loss of 99 jobs.

The company said contact centre operations will be concentrated at its centres in Australia and New Zealand. Qantas chief executive Geoff Dixon said the aviation industry is facing a major crisis and Qantas needs to ensure its future. “Acting now, on top of the measures already taken, will protect our competitive position, protect the great majority of over 36,000 jobs and enable us to grow profitably when conditions improve,” Dixon said.
