Call centre workers kidnapped in Guatemala

A man held 40 call centre staff hostage on the fifth floor of a building in Guatemala City, according to reports by Reuters today.

The 29-year-old, thought to be carrying an explosive device, shot and wounded a security guard before threatening to blow up the building unless he was allowed to see his ex-wife’s boyfriend.

Police surrounded the building and negotiators ended the five-hour siege after persuading the man to release the hostages and give himself up. No-one else was hurt.
