Fielding proposes anti-offshoring bill

Independent federal MP Steve Fielding will look to have parliament approve draft laws aimed at stopping the offshoring of contact centre jobs.

The Family First senator’s private bill also aims to make it harder for overseas contact centres to have access to the private information of Australian consumers. “When Australians call their bank or phone companies they want to speak to an operator who is based in Australia, not someone in India or the Philippines,” Fielding said.

The bill would require consumers to “opt in” before overseas contact centres could access private details. “It is wrong for companies to ship jobs overseas at the expense of Australian workers and families,” Fielding said.
